It’s easy to look at the bright side of things when you’ve just moved out of your country, but if you ever wonder what challenges you could face on the long and short term, I can name three for the time being!
Don’t worry, it’s nothing major.
These are the 3 things you need to keep in mind when you leave home, until you adapt.
1) Constantly missing your family
I know, with Skype, WhatsApp video calls & FaceTime, it seems manageable.
But when something exciting happens and you want to run to your parents’ place to share the news with them, you can’t do it anymore.
You’ll have to wait until your next trip home to finally get the chance to talk properly.
How to deal with it: Keep a countdown active to remind yourself that it’s only a matter of time before you can see them and tell them all about your adventures again!
2) The difference in culture
Something I have to constantly adapt to! I mean of course I expected that, it’s interesting!
But when the “honeymoon phase” of moving in ends, you’ll be left with a routine that includes so many different things you’re not yet used to.
How to deal with it: Learn about traditions, norms & values of this society. You won’t meet people who share EXACTLY the same things as you, unless you hang out with Lebanese people exclusively haha.
3) Supermarket Nightmares
The first challenge:
Are you used to having small cucumbers and courgettes?
Are you the number one fan of Lebanese spices?
Well, until you find your local Mediterranean supermarket, all you’re going to find is the total opposite of what you had in mind.
Parsley for tabbouleh? Good luck finding a whole batch. Lebanese bread? Yeah right! – again, until you find your supermarket.
How to deal with it: Join Facebook groups for expats, ask your friends who’ve been there longer than you have, they know where to go to find what they want, and soon so will you!
The second challenge:
No plastic bags (yay), but you have to buy reusable bags and pack your items yourself at the checkout as fast as possible!!
How to deal with it: Well, practice makes perfect. Good luck.
As I said before, they’re not a big deal but worth mentioning.
Do you have something else to add?
Let me know in the comments! ❤
